CV - Michael Gaebler

From 2010 to 2013, I completed my dissertation on the “physiology of emotional and self-related processing in social anxiety disorder” at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and in the Division of Mind and Brain Research at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (CCM) of the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin under the supervision of Henrik Walter and Judith Daniels. As a research assistant in the project “animal emotionale II”, I also investigated the complex symptomatology of patients with depersonalization-derealization disorder from a physiological and a philosophical perspective, for the latter working with Achim Stephan and Jan Slaby. While working with depersonalization-derealization patients, who perceive the real world as unreal, I became interested in how (also artificial or virtual) worlds are perceived as “real” – studying the neurophysiology of immersion and presence.

Before my PhD and my travel around the world, I completed a Dual-MSc in Brain and Mind Sciences at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI), and the University College London. During that time, I researched language processes in postlingually deaf/cochlear implanted as well as in functionally recovered stroke patients using fMRI and PET, supervised by Anne-Lise Giraud and Cathy Price, respectively.

Before that, I was a student assistant at the Berlin Neuroimaging Center under the supervision of Isabell Wartenburger, investigating speech processing using combined NIRS and EEG, and I completed a BSc in Cognitive Science at the Universität Osnabrück with a year at McGill University in Montreal.
